This 8mm home movie features footage from the Freedom Rider protests that took place in Chestertown, Maryland in February 1962. The Chestertown Freedom Rider protests were orchestrated in part by the Eastern Shore Project, an initiative of the Civic Interest Group based in Baltimore, MD. Partnering with the Northern Student Movement chapter at Swarthmore College, the Eastern Shore Project recruited college students and civil rights activists from Baltimore and Philadelphia to help organize sit-ins in Chestertown, Princess Anne, Salisbury, Easton, and Cambridge. Leaders and congregants at Bethel A.M.E. and Mt. Olive A.M.E. along with staff, students, and faculty from Washington College joined the activities of the Eastern Shore Project, helping to participate in direct-action protests, organize voter registration, and increase membership in local NAACP and Urban League chapters.
